What are spare parts?
Spare parts are substitutes for parts in products. Examples are cogwheels, rubbers, fusers, mainboards and hard disks. Everything from the housings to the tiniest screws. It can be the standard options which are optionally supplied on current products, but also parts and extras which are no longer supplied through the regular channel.

Why use spare parts?
If a malfunction occurs outside the warranty period you have the choice to invest in a completely new product or to replace the defective part with a spare.
Examples:
Your printer is used intensively. Because of this moving parts will eventually wear off. By using spare parts (i.e. a maintenance kit) you can make sure your printer stays in top condition.
The storage capacity of your server doesn't suffice any more. The part needed to increase the capacity isn't supplied through the regular channel. You have the choice to invest in a complete new server, or to buy a hard disk based on a spare part or a refurbished part (a refurbished part is a part which is repaired by an authorized company and redeployed in the market.)
Continuity and financial aspects can be grounds upon which to make the choice for a spare part or End of Life product. Especially in the current economical climate a lot of companies choose to use their equipment for a longer period of time.
